On the evening of May 17 1945, Van
Valkenburgh, in company with
Douglas H. Fox (DD-779) and a group
of four LCIs, was patrolling RP-9. Several planes approached from the west
and over the next 30 minutes, constant attacks took place. Van
Valkenburgh's direct fire splashed two Japanese planes, one 50 yards off
the fantail. Douglas H. Fox splashed two more, and the pair of
destroyers teamed up for a fifth kill. One kamikaze then crashed Douglas
H. Fox's forward gun mount. After assisting Douglas H. Fox,
Van Valkenburgh patrolled the area searching for possible missing
crewmen.
