On 18 April 1945, during the Okinawa
campaign, Heermann, in coordination with other attacking destroyers
and planes from aircraft carrier Bataan (CVL-29), sank Japanese
submarine 1-56, a carrier of kaitens—Japan’s human-guided suicide
torpedoes. On 15 August 1945, Heermann was on radar picket station
southeast of Tokyo when, several hours after the announcement of the end of
hostilities, a suicide plane began to dive in Heermann's direction.
The destroyer's gun crews shot down the aircraft in one of the final naval
actions of World War II.
