««««« Navy Presidential Unit Citation

Late in the morning of 25 October 1944, a formation of six enemy began simultaneous kamikaze attacks against task force elements, including White Plains, participating in the Battle of Leyte Gulf.  Two of aircraft attacked White Plains. White Plains’ gunners scored a hit on one of the intruders (which eventually crashed USS St. Lo) and shot down another just yards astern. The resulting explosion scattered debris across the ship’s flight deck and sides causing minor casualties. Following the action, White Plains steamed to Biak.11 crewmen were wounded.
