Late in the morning of October 25,1944 steaming off Samar in the Philippines, a task unit which included St. Lo and which had just withstood an attack by Japanese surface forces came under a concentrated air attack by Japanese suicide aircraft. One plane crashed St. Lo's flight deck, igniting explosions in the ship’s torpedo and bomb magazine. St. Lo was engulfed in flame and sank half an hour later.114 killed or missing.
