USS Sangamon (CVE-26)

лллллллл Navy Presidential Unit Citation

In the early evening of 4 May 1945, Sangamon left Kerama Retto after rearming. Japanese attackers were soon reported nearby. One Japanese aircraft eluded land based fighters sent to intercept. The attacking aircraft dove and crashed into the water some 25 feet off the carrier's starboard beam. Shortly thereafter another Japanese aircraft broke through the interceptor screen. This attacker dropped a bomb and crashed into the center of Sangamon's flight deck. The bomb explosions caused extensive damage; fires broke out and the ship lost steering control. Once steering control was reestablished, the ship was put on a course which reduced the spread of fires. Nearby ships came to assist Sangamon's damage control personnel. Before midnight, all fires were finally under control and Sangamon returned to Kerama Retto for temporary repairs. Attack casualties totaled 11 dead, 25 missing, and 21 seriously wounded.
