On 25 November 1944, while delivering attacks on Japanese positions in Manila and the northern Philippine Islands, Essex received damage for the first time in her far-ranging operations,. A kamikaze aircraft hit the port edge of the  flight deck, landing among planes gassed for takeoff, and causing extensive damage.  15 killed; 44 wounded.
