USS New Mexico (BB-40)

On January 6, 1945, during the invasion of Luzon, New Mexico took a suicide hit on her bridge which killed her commanding officer, Captain R. W. Fleming, British Lieutenant-General Herbert Lumsden, and 29 others of her crew, with 87 injured. New Mexico’s guns remained in action as her crew repaired damage and she was still in action as troops went ashore.

During the Okinawa operation, while approaching Hagushi anchorage just after sunset on May 12, 1945, New Mexico was attacked by two suicide aircraft. One aircraft plunged into New Mexico while the explosion of the bomb from the second aircraft inflicted additional damage. Fifty-four crewmen were killed and 119 wounded as a result of this attack.
