LCT (Landing Craft, Tank)

The LCT was an amphibious assault ship for landing tanks on beachheads. Unarmored and  lightly armed, the LCT was much smaller than the LST which was capable of hauling and launching an LCT. Most of the US LCTs were built in Kansas City, Kansas and floated downriver to New Orleans, prompting the craft to be nicknamed  "Prairie Ships." During the Okinawa invasion one of these craft, LCT-876, was damaged by suicide aircraft on April 3, 1945, with 2 crewmen wounded.
