Goodhue remained at Kerama Retto
during the initial landings on Okinawa. While returning to sea the evening
of April 2, Goodhue and other transports underwent a heavy air
attack. Goodhue's gun crews splashed a plane on the starboard
quarter, but another headed directly from dead ahead hit the mainmast before
crashing astern. Exploding bombs from the aircraft killed 27 and wounded
117; however, the ship did not suffer serious structural damage and was able
to continue.
