Harold Tolmasky, LCS(L)-54

We received our copy of your book. I just wanted to thank you for the beautiful dedication you wrote. We were all so touched, and are all enjoying the book. Thank you for all your efforts and dedication. Falisa Brosh (daughter)

John Littleton, LCS(L)(3)-64

"I think you have made an important contribution to the preservation of the story of WWII. Certainly, those of us who were in any way involved with the kamikaze should be thankful for your hard work and the obvious knowledge and understanding you brought to your efforts."

John Rooney, LCS(L)(3)-82

"I enjoyed very much reading your book. Your introduction of the major characters gives the story the feel of being there, and your telling of the story through the people involved is history that comes alive. Your book also covers the kamikaze actions from the beginning, in the Philippines, where it's severity I was not aware of. All through the book your descriptions of the actions is tense, like a novel."

Charlie Towers, LCS(L)-118

"I have read a number of books on Okinawa and particularly on the LCS' and their picket duty. Needless to say, your book is written by a professional who's spent many months of preparation before the commencement of his scripting. Our skipper would give you a 'Tare, Victor, George.' If my memory serves me that meant task completed very well."

Richard M. McCool, CO, LCS(L)-122

"At War With the Wind came yesterday and I stayed up late last night going through it--what a remarkable book! Dick certainly loved going over things with you. This book will always be on my bookshelf." Elaine McCool (widow)

Donald A. Lorimer, USS Intrepid (CV-11)

"Thank you for your sensitivity in portraying, what was for [my dad], an indelible memory -- of both service and the ultimate sacrifice." Jennifer Kondak (daughter)

John F. "Jack" Gamble (left), Donald A. Lorimer (right), USS Intrepid (CV-11)

I received your book this week and it is quite good. My dad was on the Intrepid from 1944-45. I was reading the account of the 25 Nov kamikaze attacks on Intrepid and was pleasantly surprised to see Don Lorimer's account of that fateful day and the burial detail. We met Don in October. Dad, Don, and other former crewmen were aboard Intrepid as it was towed back to Manhattan. Mike Gamble (son)

John Gregg, Sr., USS Bennion (DD-662)

Can't put mine down. I know my Dad will love his on his 85th birthday. Thanks for a great work. John Gregg, Jr. (son)

Dale B. Hanson, USS Bryant (DD-665)

The description of the USS Bryant, DD665 going to the aid of the destroyer Laffey and later being struck by a suicide bomber was special. I think Sears has done a marvelous job in providing us with this detailed description of suicide bombers and the War in the Pacific.

Albert Sidney Blakely, USS Bush (DD-529)

"The exhaustive work you did on that book is beyond my ability to comprehend. It is well written and gives a tremendous sense of the harshness of the realities of war without turning it into a glorified party. You are a master story teller. I appreciate the fact that you honor so many of our brave military men and women." Tony Beuving (friend)

Moses G. Hubbard, USS Bush (DD-529)

"I am fascinated by the book--so many names and events that are well known to me. Moses Hubbard was attached to the Bush (DD-529) from before she was commissioned until the day she was sunk." Elizabeth Hubbard-Ovens (widow)

S.R. (Ray) Mayhugh, USS Bush (DD-529)

"I recently was at a local book store (Borders) and went to see if it was there. By golly, three copies right there on the shelf. Felt great to know my Dad, his shipmates and all the other veterans I read about were 'at the bookstore', too." Ted Mayhugh (son)

Donald E. Roller, USS Cowell (DD-547)

"Truly an epic story. After reading the book I now realizw how fortunate I was. Thanks much for the part about me."

Larry Nelson, USS Howorth (DD-592)

"You have produced one mighty fine book here. And its a story that finally has been told by those who lived it. You have come up with the REAL skinny about what it was really like. WELL DONE."

Patrick Douhan, USS Hull (DD-350)

"You did a fantastic job of really telling it like it was right down to the many names and places. I recognized the names of many of the ships having been in earlier operations with them. The detail of which you went into describing the entire action was unbelievable and is a true story which should be told in all history classes in our high schools."

Ray Novotny, USS Hyman (DD-732)

Thank you for the wonderful inscription you wrote to my father. I'm certain that when he reads it, as well as your mention of the HYMAN, you will make an old sailor cry. But they will be tears of joy. Ray Novotny Jr. (son)

Roland A. Du Sault, USS J. William Ditter (DD-751/DM-31)

"I am writing to commend you for the excellence of your book. I was an 18 year old rangefinder operator and spotter and can readily attest to the Navy hell you covered so well... congratulations on an excellent book, the best by far I have read about the kamikazes of Okinawa."

Nick J. Korompilas, USS Mannert L. Abele (DD-733)

"My son John and I enjoyed very much reading At War with the Wind. We both congratulate you to the utmost."

Jim Cofer, USS Mugford (DD-389)

"The book is great, We were in many battles that you described, it's great reading, and I recommend it to all."

John C. Wiessler, USS Mullany (DD-528)

Wow!!! We received At War With the Wind today. Your inscription was beautiful and a moving tribute. Thank you so much for taking your time to honor my father. Your book will be a treasure in our home. Jeff Wiessler (son)

Warren H. Chapple, USS Pringle (DD-477)

"I received my copy of "At War With The Wind" a few weeks ago and it looks great. I want to thank you for signing it and including my father's cousin's name in your comments. Thanks again for the signing, but especially thanks for all the great books about Our Greatest Generation's fighting men." Bob Chaple (cousin)

Joe McDonough,  USS Twiggs (DD591)

"David-- belated congratulations on your wonderful book At War with the Wind. For those of us who experienced the nine months of Kamikaze attacks and after 60 longs years of waiting, we finally have the definitive history. Many thanks. Well done and best wishes."
