At War with the Wind
: Roll Call

About the Roll Call appendix

During the research and writing of 'At War with the Wind’ is published, we communicated with and/or interviewed hundreds of sailors and airmen (and/or their family members) from the many ships, units and squadrons who battled the attacks.

While a significant portion of the book is based on interviews and personal documents, it was possible to incorporate only a small number of the many compelling accounts that people have shared over the months.

As a means of recognizing the contributions of these many veterans, the book includes a ‘Roll Call’ appendix. The Roll Call appendix is a listing, organized by unit (ship, unit or squadron) of names of the veterans we have either communicated with directly or, in the case of deceased veterans, whose families have been contacted and supplied information.

To get a rough idea of what it looks like, link to the latest updated Roll Call now (.pdf-formatted file requiring free Adobe Acrobat reader software). (Note: This is not the final version of Roll Call. We will publish the final version to this web site as soon as it is available for our publisher.)

Our plan was to include as many names as possible in this Roll Call appendix.  The hardcover edition of At War with the Wind contains the names of 767 Navy veterans representing 177 U.S. Navy ships and craft.

Roll Call, of course, is now closed for publication of the hardcover edition of At War with the Wind.  However, looking to the possibilities of additional printings and a softcover edition of At War with the Wind, we will soon be eliciting additional names via an online data form.

We hope 'At War with the Wind'  will be an accurate  and compelling 'deck and cockpit level' reflection of the courage and sacrifice displayed by the veterans of this important part of our history. If you are a veteran of this history (or a family member of such a veteran) we look forward to the honor of  to including your name (or your family member's name) as a part of this enduring story.
