Medals and commendations seem little
to show for the dangers, efforts and sacrifices that aircrews, sailors and
soldiers display in battle. Many of the words that accompany them are
scripted, and none of the words can fully convey the surrounding horror and
confusion. Nevertheless, they are often haunting and understated tributes to
the real actions of heroic sacrifices of men and women in war. Below here
are excerpts from citations accompanying awards received by sailors and
airmen for their actions during the long months At War with the Wind.
